The Forestry Hub

We work in a network, in a set of representative landscapes linked to innovative bioeconomy value chains. These value chains are developed and tested in advanced facilities, such as the Olius pre‑industrial testing laboratory and the first‑transformation laboratory in Saldes

The Forestry Hub is an initiative of the Forestry Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia (CTFC). It serves as a bridge between research, development, and innovation, ensuring their effective transfer to the productive sector. It was created to place scientific knowledge at the service of companies, public administrations, and professionals developing sustainable, zero‑footprint projects based on agroforestry resources.

Grounded in solid science and a practical perspective, we transform natural resources into bioproducts that generate economic, environmental, and social value. We do so through competitive value chains designed for today’s challenges. We are committed to local and proximity‑based value chains that guarantee traceability and provide a seal of quality, ensuring excellence and sustainability across every project.

We are part of an applied innovation ecosystem that integrates research, knowledge transfer, and implementation. We offer access to advanced infrastructures such as pre‑industrial biorefineries and specialized equipment for the industrial processing of structural wood for construction. Every initiative is supported by an expert team that combines scientific rigour with hands‑on experience. We work from the forest to the final product, turning ideas into real, scalable solutions with positive impact.

The experts within the Forestry Hub are territorial references in adaptive forestry and value chains that strengthen the resilience of agroforestry landscapes. We actively contribute to a circular bioeconomy that integrates nature, innovation, and competitiveness.

What do we do?

We provide scientific knowledge, specialized equipment, and pre‑industrial infrastructures, such as biorefineries and pilot lines, to develop applicable, sustainable, value‑added solutions. We also offer industrial capabilities to design and validate products and processes related to structural wood for construction.

Our work spans multiple value chains, including green chemistry from local biomass, aromatic and medicinal plants, truffles, pine nuts, and other forest products.

We promote local value chains that strengthen the regional economy and ensure the traceability of resources and products. These chains always incorporate a seal of quality that certifies sustainability and environmental responsibility.

We offer comprehensive services to accelerate implementation: testing, prototyping, specialized training, technical advice, process optimization, support with certifications, and regulatory adaptation.

We also collaborate on pilot projects, incubate start‑ups, and develop market‑oriented demonstration actions to guarantee feasibility and scalability.

With a transversal approach, from design to application, we help you implement viable, distinctive, and high‑impact solutions. We adapt to your needs so that sustainability becomes a true driver of competitiveness and innovation, contributing to the economic and environmental development of the territory.

Where are we?

The Forestry Hub hosts unique infrastructures in the Mediterranean region, designed to scale innovation and accelerate the transition towards a forest‑based bioeconomy. These facilities enable product testing and development, foster technology transfer, and support pilot projects that connect research, territory, and market.

We place scientific knowledge at the service of companies, administrations, and professionals developing zero‑footprint projects from forest and agroforestry resources. From the Hub, we promote local value‑creation circuits that strengthen the local economy and ensure the traceability of sustainable resources and products.

FORESTRY HUB / OLIUS

MEDITERRANEAN
BIOTRANSFORMATION
CENTER

The facilities include wood‑transformation areas, green chemistry laboratories, aromatic and medicinal plant labs, a demonstration area for truffle applications, and dedicated training spaces.

The building is a demonstrative construction of more than 1,200 m² using structural timber from the Pyrenees, a project that reduces the carbon footprint and promotes energy efficiency, a circular bioeconomy, and local, short-supply-chain practices.

FORESTRY HUB / SALDES

LOCAL WOOD
VALORIZATION
CENTER

This facility serves the first stage of the wood value chain, focusing on grading, sawing, and drying. The process efficiently transforms raw material while adding value to the forest resource.

Managed by the Berguedan Municipal Association for Biomass, the facilities have capacity for eight people and operate year-round using their own resources. This makes Saldes a clear example of real and stable economic revitalization in isolated rural and mountain areas.
